Mother of God Tricheirousa
Icon in tempera on wood panel, depicting the Mother of God Tricheirousa (the Blessed Virgin with Three Hands), whose third hand is an ex-voto offered in thanksgiving, according to legend, by John of Damascus after his right hand was unjustly cut off. The icon belongs to the Byzantine Dexiokratousa type because she is holding the Infant Jesus with her right arm. The original icon of the Mother of God with Three Hands is in the Serbian monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos.
