Description
GEORGES KARS (1880/82-1945) The port, probably around Tossa de Mar, ca.1930 Oil on canvas, signed upper left Dimensions: 65 x 92.5 cm Provenance: Drouot-Richelieu, Paris 2014 - An Austro-Hungarian painter and draughtsman born of Jewish parents in Kralupy, Georg Karpeles, known as Georges Kars, was one of the artists of the first Ecole de Paris. Passionate about art from an early age, he moved to Madrid for a time, where he befriended Juan Gris, who influenced him in Cubism, before immersing himself in the paintings of Velázquez and Goya. In 1908, he arrived in Paris, in the Montmartre district at the famous "Bateau-Lavoir" with Picasso, Utrillo, Chagall, Soutine, Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Suzanne Valadon, with whom he remained very close. After the war, although he was still in touch with Cubism, he remained very attached to realism. He used pastels, Indian ink and watercolours. "Art lies not in an elaborate technique but in the soul", Georges Kars.
