Description
ROBERTO GAETANO CRIPPA (1921-1972) "Sun Mixed media on panel, oil with plastic and wood, signed and titled on the back. Unframed. Size: 60 x 73 cm Provenance: Galleria de Golfo, stamped on the back. - An Italian painter and sculptor born in Milan, Roberto Crippa belongs to the Spatialist movement. After starting to paint in 1945, in a figurative style with cubist influences close to Picasso's style, he joined the spatialist movement with Lucio Fontana , Gian Carozzi , Giorgio Kaisserlian , Beniamino Joppolo , Milena Milani , Sergio Dangelo , Carlo Cardazzo and Cesare Peverelli. A graduate of the Accademia di Brera, he exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale and in Trieste in a group show entitled Spatial Art. His work in the early 1950s centred on a series of paintings called Spirals, which were geometric and abstract. Then, around 1955, the spirals changed, becoming heavier, incisive and involutive, intertwined with each other. These figures are called Totems. The following year, the inspiration for the poly-material paintings continued with the production of works in iron, bronze and steel inspired by primitive symbolism. In this phase, Crippa went on to paint landscapes using the polymer technique and the usual abstract style. Also from this period, the Amiantes are paintings not made using thin sheets of asbestos applied to an engraved table. Roberto Crippa died in a plane crash during a training flight at Bresso airport, with his pupil Piero Crespi.
