This painting is archived at the foundation "Associazione per il Patrocinio e la Promozione della Figura e dell' Opera di Mario Sironi" Milano under number 158/22 RA.
An Italian painter born in Sassari and a member of the first Futurist school, he moved to Rome where he attended the Accademia di San Luca, where he made friends with Severini and Boccioni. In 1914, he moved to Milan to be closer to the Futurists and took up the themes of the "Modern Myths".
After the war, he moved towards a primitivism marked by metaphysical painting, while continuing to emphasise the affirmation of geometric volumes. In 1923, he joined the Novecento movement, with whom he shared the same neo-classical ideals, which he interpreted through a highly personal poetic style strongly tinged with misery.
Considered to be the precursor of post-war neo-realist art, his works convey a sense of solitude and silence, depicting landscapes of industrial suburbs with working-class housing estates, gasometers and cranes. The painting on display dates from this period.
