An Italian painter and sculptor born in Genoa, Emilio Scanavino was one of the leading exponents of abstract art after the Second World War. He first trained in Milan before perfecting his skills at the Liceo Artistico Nicolo Barabino art school under Mario Calonghi. In 1947, he moved to Paris, where he had close contacts with artistic circles. There he met Édouard Jaguer, Wols and Camille Bryen, and these encounters had a major influence on his art.
Scanavino painted in a postcubist style, but eventually found his way to abstract painting. He maintained contacts and artistic friendships with such greats as Lucio Fontana, Sergio Dangelo, Enrico Baj, Gianni Dova, Roberto Crippa, Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Corneille, the CoBrA group and with Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam. In 2005, his many notes and photographs led to the publication of "La leggenda degli Artusti di Calice Ligure d'Emilio Scanavino".
