Description
IBRAHIM KODRA (1918-2006) "Idolo Suonatore", 1973 Oil on canvas, signed, dated and titled on the back Dimensions: 30 x 29 cm Provenance: Galleria d'Arte San'Amelio, Bordighiera - Considered the only Albanian painter to have achieved worldwide success and recognition, Kodra attended the American Vocational School and won the Tirana Prize. In 1938, he moved to Milan on a scholarship offered by Geraldine, Queen of Albania, and enrolled at the Brera Academy, where his teachers included Carlo Carrà, Aldo Carpi and Achille Funi. Initially part of the Novecento stylistic movement, due in particular to the pictorial experiments of his Braiden masters, he later drew inspiration from the teachings of Cézanne. His work nevertheless retains a certain taste for Orientalism, particularly in the fanciful use of colour and in the geometries typical of mosaic compositions, stemming from his Balkan origins and his early Albanian training. Over time, Kodra changed his style, moving from the Cézanne style to abstract art, characterised by a certain compositional brilliance, and finally to Cubism, strongly influenced by his friend Picasso, who said of him "Kodra's signature is already a work of art", while in 1940 Paul Éluard declared that Kodra should be considered the father of a new world civilisation.
