A Swiss painter, graphic artist, engraver and illustrator born in Lucerne, Hans Erni began his apprenticeship in a surveying office before working as a draughtsman for the architect Friedrich Felder. With clear Cubist influences through Braque and Picasso, Erni was a very popular painter in Switzerland. His talent was not limited to painting, but also found expression in sculpture and engraving.
His style, for which he is famous, is unique, with contours marked with a white line, fleshy but faithfully depicted figures alongside animals. Science, history and mythology were recurring themes, with compositions depicting the contrast between Antiquity, the contemporary world and different civilisations.
