Description
MARIA PERGAY (1930-2023), attributed "Side Chair, 1969 Rare design chair in brushed steel, composed of two interlocking parts, model created in 1969, limited edition, justified and numbered under one leg "A. 03/50". Small scratches. Dimensions: h. 82 cm - Born Maria Kachnitskaya in Moldavia, Maria Pergay is a French designer and pioneer of stainless steel furniture. After arriving in France at the age of 7, she attended IDHEC and joined the studio of sculptor Ossip Zadkine in Paris. In the 1950s, after her marriage to Marc Pergay, an entrepreneur and collector, she created large wrought-iron sculptures for the windows of the Durer shoe company, and later for Dior, Hermès and Hugonet, combining noble materials and traditional craftsmanship. In the 1960s, stainless steel became his preferred material for designing furniture that would become emblematic, such as the Chaise anneaux, combining sensual forms and lightness. Her collaboration with Pierre Cardin enabled her to export her designs internationally. She also works in the Middle East, designing sumptuous interiors for private villas and palaces. Certain pieces, such as the famous Flying Carpet bed, were commissioned for the sumptuous Persepolis festivities organised by Farah Diba, wife of the Shah of Iran, or acquired by renowned collectors such as Doris and Eric Beyersdorf in Geneva. These successes confirm his status as the "goldsmith of stainless steel" and his lasting influence on contemporary design.
