HERMANN CORRODI (1844-1905) The banks of the Nile with figures Oil on canvas signed lower left Dimensions: 48 x 28 cm This is one of Corrodi's best-known compositions painted at this point on the Nile with the pyramids in the background, a composition of which he painted several versions. - An Italian Orientalist painter born in Frascati, he was the son of the Swiss painter Salomon Corrodi and the brother of Arnado. He trained under Jacques Alfred van Muyden and Alexandre Calame and perfected his skills in his father's studio at the Academie San Luca in Rome. In 1872, the Royal Family of England, to whom he was introduced, bought several landscape paintings from him, and he also enjoyed great success with the German aristocracy. From 1876 onwards, he travelled through Syria, Egypt and many countries in Mediterranean Europe and the Middle East, from which he brought back superb Orientalist compositions that made his reputation.
