A French Orientalist painter born in Paris, Théodore Frère was a pupil of Jules Coignet and Camille Roqueplan. He travelled around France in Alsace, Auvergne and Normandy, but it was his trips to Africa and the Middle East that led him to Orientalist painting.
During a three-year stay in Algiers, he painted canvases for the King of Wurtemberg, and around 1851, he visited Malta, Greece, the Ottoman Empire and Cairo, where, appointed court painter, he set up a studio.
He was one of the few painters to depict Beirut, Damascus and Palmyra, and in 1869 he was part of Empress Eugenie's retinue who travelled to the Orient to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, in the company of Eugène Fromentin and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
