An English Orientalist painter and watercolourist born in Birkenhead and the son of Irish painter Robert George Kelly, who gave him his first lessons, Robert George Talbot Kelly travelled to Egypt in the early 1880s, inspired by the landscapes he discovered on a transatlantic cruise. He settled there in 1883, learned Arabic and acquired a studio in Cairo. He then travelled the country, describing and painting the people and landscapes he encountered both in the cities and in the desert.
Talbot-Kelly worked mainly in watercolour, sometimes in black and white, and became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. His studio became a popular destination for foreign visitors, and he was even awarded the Order of the Cedive of Egypt. His experiences were recounted in an illustrated book, *Egypt: Painted and Described*, first published in 1902 and republished in 1906. Talbot-Kelly published a similar work recounting his travels in Burma, where he exerted a considerable influence on the development of Burmese art.
