A Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator born in Karlin, Kosvanec studied at the Imperial Royal High School before entering the Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Vlaho Bukovac. As an artist, he was interested in various modernist styles, realism, impressionism and symbolism.
Considered one of the greatest Czech portrait painters of his time, Kosvanec imposed a unique taste and style to which the upper middle classes and aristocracy of Prague aspired. He experimented with figurative compositions in bucolic, allegorical and mythical settings, emphasising colour, light and joie de vivre, with nature blending with the female figures. These compositions brought him immense success.
