Nicolas Petit was one of the most remarkable Parisian cabinet-makers of the second half of the 18th century. Awarded the title of Master in 1761, he worked under the Ancien Régime in a style that evolved elegantly from the late Louis XV to the neoclassical Louis XVI taste. He is particularly renowned for the quality of his rosewood and violetwood marquetry, often decorated with exceptionally fine floral motifs. His furniture, chests of drawers, secretaries and tables of all shapes are distinguished by the perfect balance between structure and decoration.
Petit worked for a wealthy aristocratic and bourgeois clientele, without having access to direct royal commissions, which did not prevent him from enjoying an excellent reputation during his lifetime. His stamp "N. PETIT" can now be found on pieces in major European and American museums, as well as in important private collections. He is considered a master of the stylistic transition between the two great reigns of 18th-century France. Rediscovered and reappraised by furniture historians in the 20th century, his work illustrates the vitality and diversity of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the cradle of Parisian cabinetmaking.
