Description
AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA Very large sculpture of Mercury (190 cm) A large bronze model with a dark patina depicting Mercury with the classic attributes of the messenger of the gods, the caduceus in his left hand, surrounded by two snakes facing each other, with which he can put souls to sleep and induce dreams, the winged helmet and winged sandals. Dimensions: approx. 190 x 105 cm The shape and posture of this bronze were inspired by a model by Giambologna (John of Bologna) from the collection of Emperor Rudolf II, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Like Giambologna's statue from around 1585, Mercury, as the executor of Jupiter's orders, is pointing with his right hand raised and his index finger outstretched to the source of all wisdom.
