Alkis Pierrakos (1920–2017) Woodland 1958 Oil on canvas, signed lower left, countersigned, dated and titled on the reverse 60 x 73 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Paris
Condition report: Bears the inscription “This is a painting by my own hand, Pierrakos, mounted in 2009” on the reverse. A graduate of the Basel School of Decorative Arts, the young Greek painter settled in Paris in 1954, armed with a resolutely Germanic artistic education. It is therefore logical that this composition lies somewhere between the total abstraction for which the artist was known in the mid-1950s and a certain latent figuration. The forms evoke both the structure of urban buildings – which the artist refers to as his ‘bâtisses’ in his admirable ink-on-paper works from the 1950s – and, as here, the perspective of a woodland glade.
