Takis (1925–2019) Triple Signal, circa 1976–1979. Painted metal, signed on the base. H. 273 cm, W. 35 cm, D. 35 cm. Provenance: > Christie’s auction, London, 2 July 1998, lot no. 345 > Private collection, Paris A certificate of authenticity may be requested by the buyer from the Takis Foundation – K.E.T.E. In 1954, the self-taught artist Takis, who had fought in the Greek Resistance during the occupation, chose to settle in Paris. The technological innovations of the immediate post-war period left a lasting impression on him: the invention of radar, the discovery of magnetic fields… The artist drew inspiration from these to develop a body of work based on the power of electromagnetism. He began with flexible metal rods, and later used suspended electromagnets. His meeting with Marcel Duchamp in 1961 proved decisive and reinforced his determination to continue his experiments. Takis’s artistic aim is to make the tensions at work perceptible. His ‘Signaux’ are his best-known and most characteristic works. Designed to interact with their surroundings, they lend the surrounding landscapes a strange character. True totems of the modern world, these sculptures belong to a time suspended and outside of history. DJ
