Condition report: In its original case. “This sculpture – one of the most significant works from André Masson’s second Surrealist period – was cast in plaster in New Preston (Connecticut) in 1942. ‘It is reminiscent of a text by the Marquis de Sade about a nocturnal outing to the countryside where all the furnishings of the place consisted of women’ (André Masson, April 1987). Its title and form place it within the tradition of themes depicting anthropomorphic furniture, which the artist worked on in Lyons-la-Forêt upon his return from Spain and continued in America. Of the many projects involving anthropomorphic furniture sculptures, this is the only one the artist decided to realise. In 1966, whilst the Louise Leiris Gallery was continuing to produce the first bronze edition, a friend of André Masson’s, the Swiss sculptor Hansjörg Gisigern, with the artist’s consent, created an enlarged version of this plaster sculpture with his students. The Louise Leiris Gallery had a single bronze copy cast in 1967. In 1986, a new, enlarged edition—though smaller than the previous one—was produced by the Due Ci Gallery, again with the consent of André Masson, who travelled to Rome to inspect the plaster model. (...) The original plaster cast from 1942 is held by the Louise Leiris Gallery (...).”
