Condition report: Mounted on a resin and mirror plinth Werner Ruhnau studied from 1941 to 1950 at the Technical University of Danzig, the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Karlsruhe; he completed his studies with an engineering degree. In collaboration with Max von Hausen and Ortwin Rave, he designed Münster City Theatre (opened on 4 February 1956) and won the competition for the Gelsenkirchen Musical Theatre.
In 1956, Ruhnau set up his own practice in Gelsenkirchen and was commissioned to build the musical theatre there. Together with the artists Yves Klein, Paul Adams, Paul Dierkes, Norbert Kricke and Jean Tinguely, he created his most significant work with this large building – influenced by the Bauhaus, for which they put the idea of the ‘Bauhütte’ into practice.
