Silkscreen print on paper, signed and numbered 173/250 on the reverse Published by Factory Additions, New York; printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co., Inc., New York 89 x 58.5 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Île-de-France Bibliography: > Feldman & Schellmann, Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonné 1962–1987, Campbell’s Soup I series (1968) II.47 Condition report: Framed, restorations A central figure in Pop Art, Andy Warhol profoundly transformed the relationship between art, the image and mass culture. Alongside Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist, he established a new visual language in the 1960s based on the appropriation, repetition and iconisation of everyday objects. The Campbell’s Soup series, begun in 1962, forms the historical foundation of his work and remains his most iconic motif on the market. Created in 1968, Campbell’s Soup I: Onion belongs to the first portfolio of silkscreen prints dedicated to this subject. Through its frontal composition, imposing format and immediate legibility, this print elevates an industrial product to the status of an absolute icon, comparable, in the collective imagination, to the portraits of Marilyn or the Brillo Boxes.
