Joan Miró fully embodied this artistic modernity through a free, poetic and resolutely innovative world. A leading figure of Surrealism, a multidisciplinary and prolific artist, he created not only paintings with dreamlike qualities but also monumental sculptures. An art enthusiast, Georges Pompidou was driven by a desire to place France at the forefront of the international cultural scene, an ambition realised in particular through the creation of the Centre Pompidou in 1977. Both shared the conviction that art must be vibrant, daring and firmly rooted at the heart of society. The presence, within the Centre Pompidou’s collections, of Joan Miró’s three monumental ‘Bleu’ works offers an eloquent and poetic illustration of this shared vision.
