Coming from a non-academic background, he began painting in the 1940s and exhibited for the first time in his hometown. From the 1950s onwards, he explored various forms of modernity: a figurative phase, followed by geometric abstraction, and even forays into collage and urban pop art. His work is characterised by a constant sense of curiosity: he blends humour, poetry, graphic playfulness and vibrant forms that seem to engage in a dialogue with the urban landscape or the imagination. At a time when many artists settled into a single style, Grandjean remained driven by experimentation and the search for a personal artistic language. For collectors and art lovers alike, Grandjean embodies an unconventional figure of the French post-war era, straddling the boundaries between abstraction, collage and visual humour. Whilst his market value does not rival that of the giants of abstraction, it reflects an active market and growing recognition. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon dedicated an exhibition to him in 2014/2015.
