Jean Miotte (1926–2016) Abstract Composition 1986 Gouache on paper, signed and dated lower right 63.5 x 48.5 cm Condition report: Framed Having frequented the studios of Othon Friez and Ossip Zadkine in the late 1940s, Miotte began exhibiting at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1953. Close to lyrical abstraction (Nicolas de Staël, Alfred Manessier, Pierre Soulages, Camille Bryen…), his work alternated between formal exploration and an examination of colour and space throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The works we are presenting illustrate his return, from 1975 onwards, to a restraint in colour and an interplay of planes in which white predominates.
