Takashi Murakami (born in 1962 in Tokyo) received a traditional Japanese artistic education. He studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he specialised in Nihonga painting and graduated in 1993.
His works combine traditional Japanese art, elements from anime and manga, and influences from pop culture. The artist consciously plays with the connection between high art and pop culture, drawing inspiration from diverse sources and fusing different styles and images.
His colourful works have been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Beyond his exceptional artistic work, Takashi Murakami is involved in many other activities. As a curator, lecturer, event organiser, radio presenter and media commentator, he supports young talent in the art scene and shares his extensive knowledge on current affairs and developments in the art world. In 2001, he also founded Kaikai Kiki Co, Ltd., a company specialising in the production of merchandise, animated films and the development of designs for renowned companies.
