Description
JAPAN, Edo period (18th-19th century)
Large bronze statuette with golden patina representing the goddess Kannon with a thousand arms (Senju Kannon). The deity stands with her main hands clasped in prayer (anjali mudra), her secondary arms fanned out around her body, holding various Buddhist attributes: lotus, vajra, Dharma wheel, trident, bell and pearl. The face is meditative, the eyes half-closed, the mouth making a slight pout. Straight hair swept back, topped with a diadem adorned with an effigy of Amithaba Buddha (Amida Nyorai). The dress has supple folds that go down to the bare feet.
