Uma-Maheshvara Southern India circa 17th-18th century Copper alloy Height 32 cm Superb representation of the divine couple Shiva and Parvati symbolising the union of masculine and feminine principles. The couple rests on the back of the nandi, Shiva's vehicle, and the goddess is seated holding a flower. sits brandishing a flower on her husband's left knee. They are leaning against a torana surmounted by a traditional Kirtimukha mouth. mouth of Kirtimukha, with a naga standing in its opening, unfurling its its five-headed bonnet over that of Shiva. (One head is missing) Provenance : - Collection of Dr P.M.
