Description
ƒ CHINA, Qing Dynasty, 19th century
Rare pair of carved soapstone figures
Representing two standing figures on naturalistic bases evoking openwork rocks. The first figure is an arhat, recognisable by his serene attitude and the prayer beads (mala) held in his hand. He is dressed in an ample robe with supple folds, decorated with finely incised floral and bird motifs, bearing witness to delicate, refined craftsmanship. The second figure is an Immortal woman holding a scroll, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. She is wearing a long, elegant dress with a ruyi collar, typical of the Qing period. The stone, in shades of beige, is enlivened by large reddish iron inclusions, giving the piece a rich natural polychromy and decorative effect. Resting on presentation plinths.
Height: 46 cm
