ƒ Coromandel lacquer screen
Consisting of eight leaves, with engraved and enhanced polychrome decoration on a blackened brown background. On one side, it presents a rich scene with numerous elegant ladies and characters moving within palatial architecture opening onto luxuriant gardens decorated with pavilions, terraces and vegetation. The main scene is framed by wide borders decorated with flowering vases, scholar's objects and archaic bronzes, while friezes of stylised shou medallions underline the whole composition. The lower part is decorated with mythical creatures and fantastic animals. The reverse shows a poem.
