Rare and important tangka hanging in applied textiles
Quadrangular in shape, with the deity Avalokiteshvara depicted in the centre seated in padmasana on a large lotus flower in full bloom, adorned with four arms, the main hands joined in anjali mudra in front of the chest, while the others hold a Buddhist rosary and a lotus stem. The figure, haloed by a vast red nimbus, is placed in front of a circular mandorla. The ensemble features a wealth of different textiles (silk, cotton and satin) and decorative braids, using damask and brocaded fabrics in different shades of colour. The background is decorated with stylised clouds and celestial elements.
