Description
TIBET, 13th century
Bronze subject with brown patina and partially inlaid with copper
Representing Shadakshari Lokeshvarah seated in padmasana on a lotus flower-shaped figure with generously modelled petals. Shadakshari Lokeshvara, the four-armed form of Avalokiteshvara associated with the sacred mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, adopts a frontal posture imbued with serenity. The main hands are clasped in front of the chest, while the others hold the traditional attributes of the divinity. The gentle features of the face are surmounted by a high, elaborate hairstyle, the whole richly adorned with finely-worked jewels and ornaments. The beaded details of the ornaments, highlighted by copper inlays, the supple modelling of the limbs and the overall balance of the composition illustrate the quality of casting characteristic of Tibetan production from this period.
Height: 13.5 cm
Width: 8.5 cm
Provenance: Former collection of Georges Palthey (1910-1996), former Director of Personnel at the United Nations in New York.
