Description
MONGOLIA, 19th century Gilt bronze group Representing the Yamantaka divinity in yab-yum with her parèdre, the divinity is depicted in alidhasana, a dynamic combat posture, using her two feet to strike down animals, themselves resting on reclining divinities. The whole rests on an oval base decorated with carved lotus petals and fleuron motifs. The god, with his wrathful expression, has a zoomorphic main head surmounted by two other heads, all encircled by shaggy, glowing hair. It is adorned with thirty-four arms, each hand holding a ritual attribute or adopting a specific mudra. The main hands hold the karttrika (ritual knife) and the kapala (skull cup), and the deity's back is covered with an elephant skin. Traces of polychromy.
