Description
MONGOLIA, Zanabazar style, 18th century
Rare ormolu statuette of Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, the deity depicted seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus-shaped base with finely chiselled petals. The Buddha adopts the iconography of Bhaisajyaguru, with his right hand lowered and resting on the base, in the gesture of taking the earth as witness, known as bhumisparshamudra, while the left hand holds a medicinal bowl in front of the bust. The serene-looking face has an elegant brownish patina contrasting with the rest of the body, with half-closed eyes surmounted by an urna in relief, a small mouth sketching a smile, and the face framed by ears with drooping lobes. The hair is in fine, tight curls and topped with the ushnisha. The body, with its slender proportions and rounded shoulders, is dressed in a sanghati monastic robe finely incised with stylised floral motifs on the border, the drapery of which elegantly follows the shapes of the torso and legs.

This work is in the tradition of Mongolian bronzes influenced by Zanabazar (1635-1723), a founding figure of this school who was a religious leader, artist and master craftsman. The founder of a workshop of major importance in Mongolia, he contributed to the emergence of a singular sculptural language, notably through the introduction of a hybrid and unique style, combining Tibetan influences and a distinctly Mongolian aesthetic sensibility, which had a lasting impact on production in the 17th and 18th centuries.
