CHINA, late Qing dynasty, 19th century
Elegant carved bamboo birdcage consisting of three small circular polychrome enamelled porcelain feeders with apocryphal Qianlong marks on the bases. It also includes carved elephant ivory inserts and decorative plates. The central perch for the bird takes the form of a ruyi sceptre, with carved dragon decoration on the shaft, and a chrysanthemum flower on the top. The three geometric ivory legs are carved in relief with a decoration of precious objects.
