CHINA, 19th century, circa 1880
A rare folded fan consisting of fifteen strands of elephant ivory, each with a relief carved decoration of calligraphy and poems on the side strands, and animated scenes on the central strands, some parts being openwork.
The fan consists of a series of ink and colour paintings on paper in different artistic styles, including a view of a pavilion in a landscape, insects among branches, a child in a boat, a goat under a tree and a bird perched on a rock. Each of the paintings is accompanied by a poem and bears the artist's signature and stamp.
