Description
CAMBODIA, 20th century, 1905
Very rare commemorative medal in yellow gold, struck on the occasion of the funeral of King Norodom I, sovereign of Cambodia from 1860 to 1904. On the obverse is a nude profile of King Norodom I facing left, surrounded by the legend "Funérailles de S.M. Norodom I Roi du Cambodge" ("Funeral of H.M. Norodom I King of Cambodia"), with the words "1905 - 45 years of reign" ("1905 - 45 years of reign"); on the reverse is the royal coat of arms of Cambodia, finely detailed, surrounded by a legend in Khmer, reflecting the national identity and symbolic context of the monarchy. Minted in Paris by the Chobillon workshop, this medal illustrates the close ties between the Cambodian monarchy and France in the early 20th century. It provides historical evidence of the protectorate period and the dynastic transition to the reign of Sisowath I.
