Description

Portrait of ancestors and descendants before a ritual altar
Painting on canvas with a polychrome decoration depicting a large group of male figures arranged in hierarchical tiers around a Confucian altar bearing ancestral tablets, incense burners and ritual vases. The figures are dressed in official robes and traditional headgear (gat and scholar’s caps), reflecting their rank within the lineage. The background is adorned with drapery and stylised decoration, characteristic of clan portraits created for ‘jesa’ ancestral worship ceremonies, intended to affirm the family’s genealogical continuity and social status.
