Bronze vase, Zun
Set on a high foot, with a broad, quadrangular body surmounted by a neck that flares widely at the opening, featuring a delicate incised decoration of taotie masks, emphasised by raised ridges along the rims. It is flanked at the shoulders by zoomorphic handles, taking the form of horned heads and chimeras. Two archaic characters are incised on the base. The piece has a green patina.

Provenance: Former family collection. The object may have belonged to one of the current owner’s great-grandfathers, born in 1873, a non-commissioned officer trained at Saint-Cyr, who lived in Asia from 1898 onwards. He was in China from 1901, where he remained for over ten years, and brought back numerous objects during his travels, as non-commissioned officers were permitted at that time to keep certain gifts received from their superiors. It was subsequently passed down through the family.
