CHINA, 19th and 20th centuries
Set of four snuff boxes
Comprising one agate snuffbox with a silhouette of a fisherman carved in relief, one in smoky quartz, one in rose quartz in a baluster shape, and one in white glass decorated with polychrome enamel lotus flowers, bearing the Qianlong mark on the neck and a partially effaced ‘gu yue xuan’ mark beneath the base.
Height: between 5.5 and 7.5 cm
(One with missing stopper)
Provenance: French family collection. The set is believed to have been brought back from Asia in the mid-20th century by a close relative of the family, known by the first name Marcel. The presence of a book dedicated to the latter by Michel Beurdeley (1962) attests to his interest in Far Eastern arts. Passed down through the family to the current owners.
