Rượu cần, literally ‘alcohol to be drunk through straws or tubes’, is a traditional rice-based drink of many communities in northern, north-western and the Central Highlands regions of Vietnam. This fermented drink is stored in a large earthenware jar and is drunk communally using long bamboo tubes, often during New Year celebrations, the new rice harvest and other village festivals.
