FRANCE, 19th century Rare engraving Depicting a detailed horizontal view of the port of Hải Phòng, with captions identifying the various buildings. Bearing the inscription in the top left-hand corner: ‘The port of Haiphong in 1885, right bank of the Sõng-Câu’ Framed under glass. 202 x 22 cm From 1874, when it was ceded to France by treaty during the colonial era, the city of Hải Phòng was one of the most important ports in South-East Asia, forming a maritime link between Europe and Asia, whilst also facilitating the flow of goods throughout the Indochinese region. Originally situated in a rural area home to small fishing villages, the city underwent a radical transformation at the hands of the French administration, which turned it into a truly ‘European-style’ and heavily industrialised city, as this engraving illustrates.
