Description
PERSONAL LIBRARY OF GEORGES ANNENKOV (1889-1974). BLOK Alexander. The Twelve, Alkonost, St Petersburg, 1918. 34 x 26 cm, 62 + 2 pp. with illustrations by Georges Annenkov and his ex- libris on the back cover. Third edition. (Many tears and missing parts). History: In January 1918, Alexander Blok composed his most famous poem, "The Twelve", in just a few days, in a burst of lightning inspiration. Normally demanding of himself, he wrote, assessing his work: "Today I am a genius". The poem was first published in February in the socialist-revolutionary newspaper La Bannière du Travail. In May 1918, it was published in book form. The poem provoked passionate and controversial reactions. Many of its passages seemed unacceptable to Alexander Blok's fellow writers. Despite this, the poem went on to become a major work of early 20th-century Russian literature, an undisputed pinnacle of the poet's oeuvre.
