Description
TIBET, 18th century
A tempera thangka on canvas, the composition centred on a Buddhist master depicted seated on a richly decorated throne within a paradisiacal garden. Dressed in a monastic robe, he holds a manuscript in his right hand and a bowl in his left; his expressive face is framed by a circular halo. At his feet sit two disciples, either meditating or studying, accompanied by young acolytes. The upper register features several Buddhas seated amongst the clouds, whilst the background depicts an idealised landscape comprising pavilions, flowering trees, rockeries and water features.
Framed under glass.
