TIBET, 18th century
A tempera thangka on canvas; the composition centres on the tantric goddess Kurukulla, depicted with red skin, dancing in a dynamic pose on a lotus-shaped pedestal. The deity is adorned with rich ornaments, necklaces and garlands of pearls, and wears a tall headdress embellished with heads and jewels, her body set against a large, flamboyant mandorla framed by foliage and blooming flowers. The lower register features a mountainous landscape populated by animals, figures and stupas, whilst stylised clouds and rock formations frame the scene.
