Description
TIBET, 18th century
Thangka painted in tempera on canvas. The composition centres on Tsongkhapa, depicted seated in padmasana on a richly decorated lotus-shaped throne, his hands performing the gesture of teaching. He is clad in the monastic robes characteristic of the Gelugpa school and wears the traditional yellow cap. Surrounding the central figure is a large group of lineage masters, Buddhas and bodhisattvas depicted within cloud-like mandorlas. In the upper section are several meditating figures seated on lotus flowers within a celestial landscape. The lower section features various wrathful deities and protectors of the Dharma surrounded by flames.
