MAURICE BUSSET (1879-1936) View of the Gergovie plateau, Auvergne, 1925 Oil on canvas Signed, dated '1925' and situated 'Gergovia' lower right (Open cracks and old restorations with pieces on the back) Oil on canvas, signed, dated '1925' and located 'Gergovia' lower right 63 x 114 cm - 24 3/4 x 44 7/8 in. Provenance Joseph Pell Lombardi Collection, Andelat, Château du Sailhant Note Maurice Busset was the author of a book entitled "Gergovia, capitale des Gaules et l'oppidum du plateau des Côtes" published in 1933 by Librairie Delagrave in Paris. He is well known for being one of the first to defend the idea that the Chanturgue and Côtes de Clermont sites, to the north of the town of Clermont-Ferrand, were the true location of the battle of Gergovia, a thesis supported after him by Paul Eychart. It is rejected by the majority of historians and archaeologists and contradicted by the latest research carried out on the Merdogne-Gergovie site, to the south of the town.
