Oil on canvas, signed lower right, inscribed '25VB/La ville/38/mm' by Madame Albert Marquet on the back Provenance : Collection Madame Albert Marquet, France Galerie Katia Granoff, Paris (acquired from the latter) Private collection, France (acquired from her in 1952) Bibliography : Jean-Claude Martinet and Guy Wildenstein, Marquet, L'Afrique du Nord, Catalogue de l'œuvre peint, Milano: Skira/Seuil; Paris: Wildenstein Institute, 2001, described and reproduced under reference I-207, p. 201 (titled La ville sous les nuages) Note: "In early 1920, Marquet travelled to Marseille in order to embark for Algiers. This first visit to Algeria was a voyage of discovery. The artist was won over by the city and the Sahara. He would return regularly to spend the winter in this sunny region. In 1923, he married an Algerian woman, Marcelle Martinet, who took him to North Africa every year. During the Second World War, they never left Algiers and bought a property nearby. The discovery of the city by sea struck all travellers. Facing east and built into the mountainside, Algiers is surrounded by rich vegetation and its white houses are covered with terraces. Marquet explored it at a time when buildings were beginning to spring up more intensively around the Turkish walls. There are still some sumptuous Moorish villas with their marvellous gardens; modern buildings have not invaded everything, although the French town has grown as necessary. Architects built according to French fashion without taking into account the differences in environment and climate. Algiers is a large Mediterranean and cosmopolitan metropolis made up of the Kasbah, a veritable city within the city, the totally original Bab-el-Oued district, the Mustapha Supérieur district, which is covered with modern buildings, and the lower town near the port, which has all the amenities of a large city. From the heights of the city and its sumptuous gardens, there is a magnificent panoramic view of the bay and surrounding mountains. Jean-Claude Martinet and Guy Wildenstein, Marquet, L'Afrique du Nord, Catalogue de l'œuvre peint, Milano: Skira/Seuil; Paris: Wildenstein Institute, 2001, pp. 75 and 78 Further information: "This and the following canvases are painted from a window of a flat further west. The artist can admire the French Quarter at his feet. The panorama stretches as far as Cap Matifou, with its industrial suburbs and the Agha and Mustapha basins. In the background you can see the mountain range that encircles the city from east to west, the first foothills of the Kabyle Djurdjura, the Blidean Atlas and the Zaccar.
