Description
Louis-Welden HAWKINS (1849-1910) Peasant Woman, ca. 1881 Oil on panel. Signed lower right. Study of a peasant woman on the back. 27 x 22 cm Provenance : - M. Borniche Collection (collection stamp on the back). Acquired directly from the artist. - Sale Collection M. Borniche, Mes Escribe-de Cagny, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 21-22 January 1884, catalogue, no. 79, under the title Paysanne. Study (fragment of label on back). Our work is a study of the painting Les Orphelins, 1881, (LUX. 353 P and RF. 1034) exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay. This young girl was also used as a model for The Little Girl and the Dead Bird, painted around 1883, and she appears in a photograph belonging to Hawkins from which he painted. The child probably belonged to the painter's close circle. We would like to thank Cécile Convert for confirming the authenticity of this work and for the information she provided. This work will be included in the artist's Catalogue raisonné: louisweldenhawkins.com. As Rodolphe Salis pointed out in an article in Le Chat Noir dated 6 May 1882 devoted to the Salon and dealing in particular with the painter Hawkins: "M. Borniche is one of his admirers. This entrepreneur, who became wealthy from the timber trade, developed a passion for the arts and frequented both public auctions and artists' studios in Paris. According to some accounts from the time, several thousand works were acquired in this way until his death in 1883. Nine sales were subsequently held at Hôtel Drouot between December 1883 and April 1884.
