Description
Sabre known as a ‘briquet’, Year IX model for the Navy or Marine Infantry.
Hilt with 36 flutes, crossguard with one arm re-stamped with an anchor, and a quillon ending in a pommel. Curved blade with a flat back, engraved ‘Varnier et Compe’, with hollow sides stamped and engraved with anchors. Black leather scabbard with two brass fittings; pommel with a guard stamped with an anchor.

A.B.E. Consulate–Empire period for the mountings and blade. Sheath from the mid-19th century.
Varnier: a cutler in Paris around 1800, specialising in naval weapons. Jarlier Buigné lists him as still in business in 1830, under the name ‘Varnier & Cie’
