Description
A fencing sword bearing the coat of arms of General Joachim Marie Alexandre AMBERT (1804–1890).
The tang is entirely made of filigree iron. The pommel is faceted and the ferrule is acid-etched with foliage scrolls. Guard with two long, straight quillons and an openwork shell decorated with friezes of geometric motifs. Triangular blade with the colichemarde engraved two-thirds of the way up with foliage scrolls and the mottos ‘fait ce que dois’ and ‘Advienne que poura’. On the reverse, General Ambert’s coat of arms beneath a baronial crown and 17th-century crossed swords.

Dated to the mid-19th century (oxidation).
Traces of repair work on the pommel.

Joachim AMBERT (1804–1890), son of General Jean Jacques AMBERT, a graduate of Saint-Cyr, served in the cavalry, notably in Algeria. He was Colonel commanding the 2nd Dragoons in 1850. A general during the Second Empire, he had also served as a Member of Parliament, a Councillor of State and a journalist.
