THE BANKS OF THE EURE IN SUMMER
Gustave Loiseau was a major painter of the post-impressionist school, which attempted to go beyond and renew the contributions of Impressionism, and trained with the painter Fernand Quignon. He stayed at Pont-Aven, where he made friends with Maxime Maufra, Henry Moret and Émile Bernard, and benefited from Paul Gauguin's advice. He took part in some of the Impressionist exhibitions in Paris from 1894.
Settling in Auvers-sur-Oise and then Pontoise, a pure landscape painter, he followed in the footsteps of Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet. Like them, he worked on the same motifs in series under different days in order to capture their ephemeral impressions. His interest lay in rendering atmospheric variations over the seasons and climates.
His brushstrokes perfectly conveyed the luminous vibrations of the landscapes he observed.
Our large picture, painted in 1901, depicts the banks of the Eure in summer.
The meandering river runs through the composition, mirroring the reflections of the sky and the foliage, which are occasionally enriched by touches of pure colour. The bright yellows of the foreground resonate in counterpoint with the deep blue-greens of the grove of trees.
of trees, while the eye breathes as it escapes to the patch of sky executed in a broader brushstroke. Here, Loiseau composes a perfectly mastered symphony of colour and harmony. Some of the reflections in the water seem to foreshadow the tonalities that
Monet's Water Lilies.
Never before seen at auction, this dazzling canvas condenses all Gustave Loiseau's qualities in a radiant hymn to nature.
