"The first panel commissioned for the Sorbonne appeared in the Salon des Artistes Français and depicts an experiment by Claude Bernard at the Collège de France. The professor is surrounded by Paul Bert, d'Arsonval and Malassez.
Malassez and his wife were so enchanted by the painting that they asked the painter to make a copy of Malassez's head. This commission was carried out in May 1890".
